Award winner Amber Hughes Photography

This interview features award winner Amber and her business Amber Hughes Photography! Amber’s winning couple photograph above received the highest score of all the submission from the first edition of the awards.

Tell us about yourself!

Oh man, this is always the hardest question to answer! Let’s see… I’m obsessed with knitting and embroidery, love a good pint of beer, will never say no to a bowl of ramen and have a serious weak spot for vintage housewares. I also own my own pinball machine and would love to own several more! By day I’m a wedding photographer specializing in fun, unique and colourful weddings in Vancouver BC as well as select Canadian locations.

What makes your business unique, different or special?

I would say it’s my use of light (both natural and artificial), my true to life colour processing and my passion for creative compositions and techniques. I like to blend creativity and colour with emotion and connection in my images.

How do you support your lifestyle when you have less weddings than expected for the year?

I also shoot families, headshots and personal brand stories for small businesses in addition to hosting workshops on flash photography for weddings and events!

If you had one piece of advice for couples looking for a wedding photographer, what would it be?

Find someone who you connect with on a personal level as well as someone who’s work you adore. The photographer is often one of the only vendors who is with you through the entire day, so it’s important to find someone who’s on the same wavelength as you. Bonus points if you have the same sense of humour!

If you weren’t shooting weddings, what would you be doing for work?

Hmm… can professional pinball player and competitive crafter be a thing? Cause if so I pick that.

What do you think makes a photograph good?

If a photograph makes you feel something, it’s a good photo. The best photos evoke an emotional response from their viewers.

What is a business mistake you made?

Investing in equipment I thought I needed to get better at my craft, when really it was my technique that was the most important thing to work on. You can have every gadget on the market but without a solid knowledge to back it up you’re not going to progress very quickly.

Do you have advice for new photographers?

Learn light! Both natural and artificial. It’s so integral to what we do and the foundation to every good photo. Practice with light until it becomes as natural as breathing.

What’s something people need to understand about photography?

That every wedding and session is unique. It’s best to trust in your photographer’s process and allow them to create something new for you rather than try to adhere to recreating inspiration photos found elsewhere. They’ll never be the same as the original and I guarantee what your photographer will come up with organically will be unique and beautiful!

Anything else we should know about you?

I am a MASSIVE nerd for anything science fiction or fantasy. If you want someone to chat Lord of the Rings or Dr. Who with, I’m your girl!
